Reference

Reference apps may show pictures with descriptions, provide video clips from around the world, and act as a compact atlas to view offline. Reference apps cover many subjects.

App developers choose the category for an app, and there is overlap between categories. You may also want to check the education section.

WolframAlpha reference app

WolframAlpha

Wolfram Alpha contains a wealth of information and provides a smart interface that allows you to ask questions in a natural way.

You can ask, "What colour do you get when you mix red and green?", or use a short form, "red + green".

Enter two company names and get a side-by-side comparison of their stock information. Type "1 foot" and get unit conversions along with examples of things that are a few inches long. Ask for "GDP France" and get a full page of information on France's economy.

This app is similar to the WolframAlpha website, but the app caches results to make the information available offline. It works on an iPhone and iPad, making it a very cool iapp.
